Picking Up a Hire Car in Melbourne With a Baby
Landing in Melbourne and collecting a hire car with a baby or toddler is extra planning most travel guides skip. Check the car and the seat before the first drive — not in the rental car park with a queue behind you.
This checklist is for the hire-car trip. For longer stays see grandparent / visitor capsule hire and extended rear-facing hire.
Before you fly — checklist
- 1. Dates, child’s age and size, Melbourne pick-up or fitting address
- 2. Ask the rental desk for the model, not only “mid-size SUV”
- 3. ISOFIX — which rear positions, if any
- 4. Three-across? Tell us before you book the car class
- 5. You can refuse the rental company’s add-on seat
- 6. Boot: capsule + pram must actually close
Does this class of car have ISOFIX?
Not every hire car — or every trim in a “class” — has ISOFIX. Rental sites rarely spell it out. When it exists, it is usually the two outer rear seats, not the middle.
A “mid-size SUV” on the day can be different makes with different anchors. If ISOFIX matters to the seat you hire, ask the desk for the actual model. Background: ISOFIX vs seat belt.

Centre seat or three-across?
Work this out before pick-up. ISOFIX will not install three seats, and most cars have no centre ISOFIX. Tell us your dates and we can talk seats and car classes that have a chance. Guide: fitting three-across.
Can I refuse the rental company’s seat?
Yes. The add-on is optional. You can bring or hire your own restraint.
Counter seats are often older, a generic convertible, and already set forward-facing. That may be legal for a six-month-old in some cases — it is not best practice. Hiring means the seat matches the child, and we can fit it if you book that in.

Boot space: capsule + pram
A rear-facing capsule uses more boot than people expect. Add a folded pram and a small hatch often will not close. Check boot size, not just passenger count — or ask us which car classes usually swallow both.
Capsule, ERF or harnessed seat?
Match the child, not the brochure.

Capsule
Newborns and smaller babies. Many outgrow it well before 12 months. Easy in/out if they’re asleep.

Extended rear-facing
After the capsule, stay rear-facing as long as markers allow.

Harnessed Type G
Forward-facing 6-point harness (Maxi Guard, Emerge) — often easier than a booster in a tight row.

Booster
Only after they outgrow the harnessed seat by markers — not because the rental had a booster.

Pick-up vs fitting
Collect from Oakleigh East, or book fitting to line up after the rental desk. Flag flight times early — arrival day gets tight.

Tell us it’s a hire car
Some have ISOFIX, some don’t. That changes capsule vs ClickTight vs a belt install.
