Most capsules suit about the first 6 months. Some extend toward 12 months on paper — in real use many children outgrow them around 8–10 months as they grow and the shell gets heavy to carry.

What comes next: extended rear-facing
Outgrowing a capsule does not mean turning them forward-facing. Best practice is to stay rear-facing as long as the seat allows.
Convertible seats built to current Australian standards are designed to keep many children rear-facing well past the first birthday — often toward about 30 months, and longer on newer models. Always follow the markers and manual for the exact seat.

How to tell the seat is in rear-facing mode
A correctly used extended rear-facing seat usually shows two things:
Shoulder height markers
Markers show the shoulder range for that mode. Torso length — not “looking big” — decides when that mode is outgrown. Note the text on the label it tells you what you need to do.
Blue belt path = rear-facing
On many Australian seats the rear-facing belt path is blue. Yellow is typically forward-facing; red is often booster. Markers alone are not enough — check the colour of the path in use.
