Toddler in an extended rear-facing car seat — Melbourne hire

Extended Rear Facing Car Seat Hire (a Guide for Grandparents and visiting families)

A capsule often isn’t enough after 6–10 months. Keep them rear-facing in the right convertible seat.

If you’re a grandparent minding a grandchild for a few weeks, or visiting Melbourne with a toddler, a baby capsule often does not cover the whole trip. That catches more visiting families out than you’d expect.

Short-term baby car seat hire is for this situation — the right extended rear-facing seat for the dates you need, with optional accredited fitting and a demonstration.

Capsules don’t last as long as you’d think

Most capsules suit about the first 6 months. Some extend toward 12 months on paper — in real use many children outgrow them around 8–10 months as they grow and the shell gets heavy to carry.

If the child is sitting confidently, crawling, or near their first birthday, a capsule may already be the wrong seat — even if that’s what they used as a newborn. See when a baby outgrows a capsule.

What comes next: extended rear-facing

Outgrowing a capsule does not mean turning them forward-facing. Best practice is to stay rear-facing as long as the seat allows.

Convertible seats built to current Australian standards are designed to keep many children rear-facing well past the first birthday — often toward about 30 months, and longer on newer models. Always follow the markers and manual for the exact seat.

Rear-facing still protects a young neck and spine better in a crash. Related: rear-facing vs forward-facing.

How to tell the seat is in rear-facing mode

A correctly used extended rear-facing seat usually shows two things:

Shoulder height markers on an extended rear-facing seat

Shoulder height markers

Markers show the shoulder range for that mode. Torso length — not “looking big” — decides when that mode is outgrown. Note the text on the label it tells you what you need to do.

Blue rear-facing seat belt path on a convertible car seat

Blue belt path = rear-facing

On many Australian seats the rear-facing belt path is blue. Yellow is typically forward-facing; red is often booster. Markers alone are not enough — check the colour of the path in use.

Easy to mix up without a demo — which is why professional fitting helps on a short visit.

Why hire instead of borrowing or buying

Borrowing an old seat can mean unknown history, dirty or stiff webbing, missing clips, or a model nobody remembers how to install.

Buying a cheap seat for a two-week visit often leaves you with something hard to adjust in an unfamiliar car — then stored unused. Hire for the dates you need.

Why short-term hire makes sense

Right seat, right length

A weekend, a week’s holiday or a few weeks with visitors — hire for the period you need. No leftover Baby Car Seat to store afterwards. Avoid buying equipment that may be used only a handful of times and then take up storage space.

Installation support

A Baby Car Seat is only as safe as its install.Accredited fitting can help when the Car Seat is going into a grandparent’s car, a hire car or another unfamiliar vehicle.

Demo, not just drop-off

A demonstration covers harness adjustment, buckling, positioning and the checks to complete before each trip. — especially useful if modern car-seats are new to you.

Extended rear-facing seats we often recommend

Suitability depends on the child, the car and how long you need the seat. Examples:

Infa Secure Quattro extended rear-facing car seat

Infa Secure Quattro

Newborn-to-about-4-years convertible with extended rear-facing and a twist-and-lift harness. Narrow footprint that still uses a full-width shell. Confirm any Safe Grip / locking clip is included with the hire.

Infa Secure Eclipse

Tips for grandparents and occasional users

Convertibles work differently from older seats and from capsules. Learn the seat before the first trip.

Loosen the harness fully, seat the child, then tighten
Rear-facing: harness at or just above the shoulders
Snug harness — no pinch of slack at the shoulder
Use the blue path for rear-facing belt installs
Top tether as the manufacturer requires
Front seat must not press on a rear-facing shell
No bulky jackets under the harness

Frequently asked questions

Can I hire a rear-facing seat for just a few days?+
Yes. Short-term hire suits weekends, holidays and visitor stays. Ask about the minimum period when you book.
My grandchild outgrew a capsule — do they have to face forward?+
No. Many convertibles keep children rear-facing well past 12 months if markers and the manual allow it. That’s usually the better next step.
Quattro or Eclipse?+
Both are extended rear-facing convertibles. Eclipse is often chosen for a lower profile; Quattro for the harness style and narrower footprint. We match the child and the car.
Do you install the hired seat?+
ACRI accredited mobile installation is available across Bayside and South East Melbourne. Confirm when you book — useful for hire cars and grandparents’ vehicles.
Where do I pick up from?+
Oakleigh East, with delivery and fitting arranged by location and booking.
What if they still fit a capsule?+
Then start with grandparent / short-term capsule hire instead.
